United Methodist Home for Children

Contact: Kathy Eppley
Provides shelter and therapeutic home environment for abused and delinquent children and youth at the home located in Mechanicsburg.

Opportunities for Service:
  • Collect clothing, school supplies and other necessities for the home
  • Assist in clean up of grounds
  • Assist with semi-annual yard sales to raise funds
  • Provide gifts for the children and youth at Christmas through an Angel Tree

Habitat For Humanity

Contact: Bob Hale
Assists persons to obtain decent affordable homes in the Cumberland County through new construction or renovation.

Opportunities for Service:
  • Provide skilled (and unskilled) labor to construct or renovate homes
  • Clean up debris from building activity
  • Provide refreshments to workers
  • Counsel and assist families on homeownership issues
  • Assist in coordinating activities with other area churches

Covenant to Care

Contact: Maisie Godfrey
Provides support for HIV positive and AIDS patients and their families in the Carlisle area.

Opportunities for Service:
  • Provide information on AIDS and HIV to local groups, schools, etc.
  • Serve on a conference committee
  • Provide monetary assistance as needed to individuals and families in need
  • Sponsor Angel Tree gifts at Christmas time and meals at holiday times

My Brother’s Table

Contact: Bob Hale
Provides an evening meal to the hungry on Sundays.

Opportunities for Service:
  • Prepare and serve food at the soup kitchen on the fourth Sunday of even-numbered months.

Fruitbelt Farmworkers’ Ministry

Contact: Laurel Pfister
Provides spiritual support and addresses physical needs of migrant farm workers in Adams, Cumberland, and Franklin counties.

Opportunities for Service:
  • Spanish-speakers and those willing to learn conversational Spanish
  • Provide worship opportunities
  • Prepare health kits for workers
  • Collect and deliver sweatshirts and blankets
  • Provide a meal in the fall
  • Interact socially with workers during the fall
  • Contribute items for a silent auction to raise money for the ministry

Project S.H.A.R.E.

Collects and distributes food to the hungry in the greater Carlisle area.

Opportunities for Service:
  • Provide 18 oz. jars of peanut butter to fulfill Allison's commitment to provide 500 jars of peanut butter per month
  • Assist in distributing food to recipient families one Thursday each month
  • In summer months, glean crops at local farms on Wednesday evenings and on certain Saturdays in September and October at local orchards

Samaritan Fellowship

Contact: Jim Boytim
Provides emergency financial assistance to persons in the greater Carlisle area.

Opportunities for Service:
  • Meet with the Fellowship on Saturday mornings to assess client needs and to secure client services at other times
  • Provide care and activities for children of persons who are being interviewed on Saturday mornings

Safe Harbour

Contact: Safe Harbour
Provides short-term housing and supportive services to individuals and families helping them achieve independent living by increasing their basic life skills.

Opportunities for Service:
  • Provide in-depth supportive relationships to client families
  • Supervise the play area on weekday evenings
  • Provide baby-sitting services
  • Provide "on-call" transportation services
  • Counsel on money management
  • Tutor basic skills as needed
  • Contribute good-quality household items and clothing

Shoebox Ministry

Contact: Adora Smith
Prepares shoeboxes filled with personal care items that are distributed by the Salvation Army and other organizations to the homeless, migrant workers andothers in need.

Opportunities for Service:
  • Contribute donations of personal items, shoeboxes and devotional items
  • Assemble the contents of items into the shoeboxes
  • Deliver the shoeboxes


Basic Contents of Shoeboxes:
  • One toothbrush
  • One tube of toothpaste
  • One washcloth
  • One large bar of soap or four small bars
  • One comb
  • Two small travel-size bottles of shampoo
  • One note pad
  • One pen
  • One stick deodorant
  • One pack of pocket tissues
  • Three band-aids
  • One copy of The Upper Room
